Have lunch once a week with an elementary school student–45 minutes, once a week, can change a life

The Lunch Buddy Program originally was established in 1993 to provide one-on-one mentors for elementary students who need a positive role model in their lives. The program currently serves children in twenty Vancouver School District elementary schools: Sarah J. Anderson, Chinook, Eisenhower, Felida, Franklin, Fruit Valley, Harney, Hazel Dell, Hough, King, Lincoln, Marshall, Minnehaha, Ogden, Roosevelt, Sacajawea, Salmon Creek, Truman, Walnut Grove, and Washington. Lunch Buddies build a friendship with one student and provide a positive influence. The Vancouver School District Foundation coordinates the program and assists in recruiting mentors.

Community members are needed to be Lunch Buddies. Currently there are 350 children with an adult Buddy, however, over 100 children are on the wait list; two thirds of those waiting are boys. Buddies have lunch at school once a week. After lunch they have time to read, play a board game or just talk. The time commitment is less than an hour a week, until the end of the school year.
